From Bean to Brew: The Journey of Coffee’s Origin

The story of coffee’s origin begins centuries ago in the highlands of Ethiopia. Legend has it that a goat herder named Kaldi discovered coffee when he noticed his goats were unusually energetic after eating the red berries from a certain plant. Curious, Kaldi tried the berries himself and soon felt a similar burst of vitality.

Kaldi shared his discovery with a local monk, who brewed the berries into a drink to help him stay awake during long prayers. The drink spread to nearby monasteries, and over time, coffee made its way to the Arabian Peninsula, where it was cultivated and traded.

By the 15th century, coffee became an essential part of daily life in the Middle East, with Yemen as a central hub. It wasn’t long before coffee reached Europe and the rest of the world, where it grew into the global phenomenon we know today—a drink that energizes, connects, and fuels moments of creativity and conversation.

I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.

4 Types of Coffee Beans

If you are an avid coffee drinker, you’ve probably wondered just how many different types of coffee beans there are and what makes them unique.

Coffea arabica

These beans are grown at high altitudes and need to be in an area that has a steady rainfall and plenty of shade.

Robusta-coffee-bean

Coffea caniphora

This type of coffee bean grows best in a hot climate with irregular rainfall and can grow at a number of altitudes too. Compared to Arabica beans, those that grow on the Robusta plant have double the amount of caffeine in them, meaning that they are an excellent choice for a real boost and offer a more harsh flavour..

Coffea liberica

One of the hardest types of coffee bean to come by is the Liberica bean. They are larger than the other beans and is the only one in the world that is known to have an irregular shape.

Coffea excelsa

Though it was once considered a separate coffee species, scientists recently reclassified it as a Liberica variant. Excelsa beans grow almost entirely in Southeast Asia, and they’re shaped somewhat like Liberica beans — elongated ovals.
